QUANTUM FOLDING

The conceptual origin of this work arises from a reflection on the multidimensional structure of the universe and the folding of space, as well as their intrinsic relationship to the deep spiritual frameworks of human civilization. Part of the inspiration came from the artist’s visit in 2023 to a temple within the Citadel of Saladin in Egypt, where the intricate and highly precise geometric ceiling paintings prompted an ongoing contemplation of mathematical order, cosmic archetypes, and the modes through which human beings perceive the world.

Since ancient times, geometric forms have served as an abstract language through which humanity has sought to understand the laws of the universe and construct spiritual order. From the Taiji yin-yang diagram in ancient China to the proportional structures of the Egyptian pyramids, these cross-civilizational motifs embody not only an exploration of cosmic origin, but also a shared understanding of structural aesthetics and proportional harmony. They are at once systems of knowledge and models of thought.

With fractal geometry as its core visual structure, the work unfolds a spatial narrative of dimension and reality through the mathematical logic of self-similarity and hierarchical recursion. Fractals articulate complex order while implying the possibility of infinite expansion, as though establishing a structural correspondence and resonance between microscopic particles and macroscopic galaxies. Through mechanical devices and a light-and-shadow system, the artist transforms geometric structures into dynamic projections, allowing the imagery to retain its internal logic and rhythm even as it continuously changes.

These constantly evolving two-dimensional structures of light and shadow symbolize the projection and manifestation of higher-dimensional space within lower-dimensional reality. What the viewer encounters is not a fixed image, but a generative process suspended between unfolding and folding. As one watches and moves through the space, spatial relationships continually shift, and perception itself becomes the medium connecting different dimensions.

In this sense, the work constructs a metaphorical relationship around dimensionality: much like the projections in Plato’s cave, the forms accessible to human perception may be nothing more than fragments or afterimages of a higher-dimensional structure. Although the viewer’s movement and gaze do not directly alter the operation of the image, they complete, on a spiritual level, a passage across thresholds—between the visible and the invisible, the determined and the indeterminate.

Ultimately, Quantum Fold points toward a reimagining of the overall structure of the universe. Between chaos and order, finitude and infinity, reality is no longer understood as a stable entity, but as a state of continual generation through folding and unfolding. Perception and cognition are thus repositioned as vital channels through which one may come to understand both the self and its relation to the cosmos.
