CV
Alex Long Yuan is a London-and Shanghai-based interdisciplinary contemporary artist and new media installation artist. He holds a Master’s degree from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London. His artistic practice centers on the coupling of perception, ecology, and technology, approaching artworks as operational systems rather than static objects. Through the organization of new media installations, experimental materials, and environmental and behavioral data, he constructs multi-sensory feedback structures involving light, sound, and scent, investigating how inner experience is shaped within technological environments and addressing the growing perceptual and ethical tensions between contemporary humanity and ecological systems. Alongside this, he continuously integrates structural modes of thinking drawn from traditional Chinese aesthetics into contemporary media practice, advancing cross-cultural translations of form and methodology.
As the sole commissioned artist for the Forest for Life programme under the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, he initiated and leads the global co-creation project Sustainability Resonator. Working with recycled plastics, sound waves, and environmental data, the project establishes cyclical feedback systems across physical and digital domains, articulating resonant relationships between ecological pressure, material metabolism, and collective consciousness. Through a non-oppositional, systems-based approach, the work reflects both the vulnerability of human civilization amid ecological transformation and its latent capacities for repair and regeneration.
In recent years, his research has further extended into neuroscience and mechanisms of consciousness. From the perspective of neurodiversity, he explores emotional technologies and multi-sensory feedback systems through installation-based prototypes. He founded INOASIS LAB, a future perception research platform, conceived as a working site for artistic research and experimental installations. The platform engages with themes such as mental sustainability and future emotional landscapes, advancing cross-disciplinary practices concerned with perception, memory, and technological ethics.
His works have been presented at major art institutions including the Saatchi Gallery, London; South London Gallery; UCCA Center for Contemporary Art; West Bund Art Center, Shanghai; Tang Contemporary Art, Beijing; Beijing Times Art Museum; OCAT Shenzhen; Sea World Culture and Arts Center, Shenzhen; Shanghai Science and Technology Museum; Shenzhen Jupiter Museum of Art; as well as the Solvay Contemporary Art Center, Poland, and KUBUS – Städtische Galerie Hannover, Germany. He has also participated in international exhibition platforms including the Mediations Biennale, Cairo OFF Biennale, and the Havana Biennial. His recent project Emotional Oasis was awarded Second Prize at the Google Gemma 3 Developer Competition.
